After the chair rail was reinstalled, it was painted with the same cream color paint that was applied to the other pieces of surviving Madison-period trim in the room. The discovery of the profile on the chimneypiece also proved to be significant because it was used to reconstruct the chair rails in three other ca. 1764 rooms where no evidence of the chair rail profile survived.
