The evidence for the newel posts was particularly important because it indicated that the stair was protected by a railing on the second floor and had not been enclosed by a partition.  However, much more information would be needed before the Restoration team could reconstruct the stair.  While the approximate location and size of the stair was known, major questions still remained regarding the stair’s slope and what its architectural trim looked like.  Without answers to these questions the stair could never accurately be reconstructed.
