The first step in reconstructing the closet was to determine the location of the ca. 1764 studs.  Because the ca. 1764 floorboards survived, investigators knew that evidence for the studs should therefore also survive.  When the floorboards were inspected mortises in the boards were found that had originally been used to secure the tenons on the ends of the studs.
