To reconstruct the paneling, both molding profiles and construction details were meticulously copied from the surviving paneling in the South Passage. The new individual rails, stiles and panels were then milled out of high-grade reclaimed heart pine to match the material that the Madisons would have used in ca. 1764. Similar to carpenters in the 18th century, the restoration carpenters assembled each piece of paneling before they were installed in the room.
