One great source of documentary information used during the Restoration was a ca. 1816 Brass Founder's Catalog archived in the library of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation.  This catalog included an incredible variety of hardware and amazingly there were several pieces that matched the ghosts uncovered on the Madison-era doors.   One of the best matches found was a head bolt discovered on the east door to the North Passage.
