Finally, two almost complete rim locks that had originally been installed at Montpelier were discovered in the collection of the Maryland State Historical Society.   The locks had been donated to the historical society by one of Montpelier's owners in the late 19th century.  While these locks were too far deteriorated to reinstall (repairing them would have meant replacing much of the original material), they did serve as invaluable examples of what the Manison’s Madison-era locks looked like.

A Madison rim lock that was found in the collection of the Maryland Historical Society.  The Maryland Historical Society kindly deaccessioned the locks from their collection during the Restoration and they are now part of Montpelier's permanent collection.
