One of the largest and most prominent elements missing from the house at the start of the Restoration was the staircase in the North Passage.  The stair had been removed in ca. 1850 when the house underwent a major renovation.  Because the stair was a major functional and decorative element for President Madison’s ca. 1797 addition it was vitally important for it to be reconstructed as accurately as possible.
