At Montpelier local artist Farrar Woltz was contracted to grain the stair's railings, newels, and risers. To reproduce the Madison-era graining she copied the surviving ca. 1797 finish found on the newel post fragment. As a result the graining currently found on the stair exactly matches what President Madison would have seen almost every day of his life at Montpelier.
